Pointers hold of pesky I-G/H
Such was the case Friday night in a SWAL showdown between Mineral Point and Iowa-Grant/Highland won by the Pointers by the slimmest of margins - 40-39.
The match was decided when 170 lb. I-G/H wrestler Brady Peat beat Pointer Sawyer Wallace 9-4, a three point win for the Panthers, and it was followed up by Pointer Kyle Juedes pinning Clint Hablik at 182.
The Panthers folllowed up with four consecutive pins to close out the match but fell one point sshort.
"The match was actually won when Sawyer didn't give up any bonus points," said Mineral Point coach Scott Schmitz. "Give Ryan (I-G/H coach Allen) credit. He won the toss and put kids where he wanted to out on the mat."
"Everybody just has to go out there and do their job," Schmitz added. "We lost at 220 when we were in a position to win and at heavyweight we wrestled 5:30 and were leading 13-1 then made a freshman mistake and Rider made us pay. We had two moves cost us 21 points tonight and we can't have that down the road."
Panther coach Allen said about the match, "We knew we had to make some changes to beat them. We fought - that's all I can ask for. We lost a couple where we bumped up a weight."
"A good match always comes down to bonus points and they got more than we did tonight."
