Eagles stop the Crusaders
It is also no secret that Madison Edgewood sees intensity each time out in the Badger Conference.
So when two teams understanding the concept of intensity meet somethings got to give.
What gave was the intensity level set by Barneveld was too much for the Lady Crusaders, especially in the second half. Barneveld owned it and handled Edgewood 51-37 in a non-conference battle Monday.
"They (Edgewood) see intensity every night in the Badger so we had to step it up tonight," said Barn-eveld coach Jim Myers.
And step up they did.
Once the defense, combined with the shooting of Hannah Whitish and Rachel Slaney, got into the flow the Eagles maintained a 15 point lead much of the game. They had the margin to 22 at one time before cruising to the finish.
The first quarter saw Barneveld leading at the end of it 19-6 but Edgewood regrouped and faced a deficit of 29-17 at the half. A 14-7 third quarter gave the Eagles the cushion they carried to the end of the game.
The Eagle defense focused on slowing down Edgewood's scoring leader Estella Moschkau, a 6-1 sophomore, and limited her to nine points.
"We did a nice job holding her down," Myers said.
Senior Emma Meriggioli, a NCAA D-2 California Baptist recruit, led the Crusaders with 10.
With the Crusaders hanging around Hannah Whitish, Rachel Slaney found some roaming room and led the Eagles with 20 points.
"She was a real force," Myers said. "Edgewood is bigger than us and she worked very hard, hitting some key shots."
Hannah Whitish still scored 15 points even with all the attention she received. Her cousin, Mia, helped her out and made the Crusaders pay for guarding Hannah so close.
"Mia hit some big points for us in the third quarter to keep us up," Myers said.
The 6-2 senior center for the Eagles, Maddie Oimoen, also played a key role in the win.
"She stayed out of foul trouble which kept her on the floor," said Myers. "She gives us another weapon."
Oimoen had six points and grabbed some big rebounds for the Eagles. Myers said she also had a couple nice moves in the post.
"Another thing we did well was taking care of the basketball," Myers said. "Edgewood is a good team and we played them pretty well. It was a big win."
