Along the Ad Routes
By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com
it Sunday in the NFC Championship football game. They had Seattle on the
ropes, but couldn't get the job done. First, twice being at the Seattle one
yard line and not getting a touchdown is really a disaster waiting to happen.
Then they let a field goal try turn into a touchdown pass. And then to top it
off, on an onside kick a tight end (hands man) lets the ball hit the Packer in
the helmet without even touching it with his hands (did I say hands man?)
and it goes right to a Seattle player who didn't get blocked by that player
who blew it! Oh, did I mention that on the final Green Bay drive - that the
got a game-tying field goal out of - that a couple of pass routes saw Packer
quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his receiver not on the same page? The
Packers should've had that game so far out of reach by half-time that no
team could've come back!

Credit Russell Wilson (former UW Badger) though for not letting four
interceptions and a fumble rattle him. He engineered each of the final three
scoring drives to a tee. The Packer defense that was tremendous for 3 1/2
quarters suddenly went away. When you can't execute the little things the
Packers didn't towards the end, you don't deserve to be in the Super Bowl!

Sunday was a beautiful day for the Governor Dodge State Park sponsored
Kid's Fishing Event (see above photo of some of them heading from the
beach area to the ice). There was a good group of youngsters out on the ice
at Twin Valley Lake with a lot of parents there with them. Many of the
youngsters (and parents) were ice fishing for the very first time too! You
may think that the warm weather may make the ice unstable, but it takes a
lot of warmth to do that to the ice this time of year, especially after the last
cold snap we had.

This weekend finds two "winter" events going on. Governor Dodge State
Park will be the scene for a Candlelight Ski/Snowshoe event Saturday night
and the annual Blackhawk Lake Fisheree will be held on Sunday. The
weather should be pretty good for both events with maybe a little snow on
Sunday - but mild - so don't miss out!

I understand that Hi-Point Steakhouse just outside of Ridgeway is coming
along with an early February opening planned. They are going back to the
"old" Hi-Point look and food structure!

I've had several people tell me that I do a good thing by talking about
drivers stopping or not stopping when I'm in the crosswalk downtown.
They say it maybe has really made a difference in people stopping for them
when they are in the crosswalk. I've even had people tell me that people are
stopping in other places around here when they haven't been stopping
before!

Now if we only can get people to use their directionals when they are
making a turn! I can't believe how many times that has happened to me -
especially lately.

If any of you want to read a book that features the years 1963 (brother Pat)
and 1964 when Dodgeville High School's boys basketball team finished
2nd and 1st at the state tournament with a touch on my golfing career at
DHS (1962-1964) - the book "Dodgeville Capturing Hearts" is available at
the Chronicle office for $18 with a portion of the proceeds going to the
Dodgeville Area Scholarship Foundation (DASFI). We just received a few
boxes from Richland Center High School, so we have plenty! It even shows
the baseball, football and track teams from that era along with some diagramed
plays by Coach "Weenie" Wilson. It is quite the book!
