Strong first half boosts Dodgers

Five girls scored in double figures and the Dodgeville girls basketball team got past visiting Brodhead 62-51 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
Sophomore Kara Crowley led the way for the Dodgers with 15 points with her sister Samantha hitting 12 and both Taylor Stanek and Hannah Jones adding 11.
Brodhead wasn't without multiple double figure scorers either as junior Amber Pickel led all scorers with 18 points while junior Kylie Moe hit 16 and freshman Erin Nyhus chiped in 11.
The Dodgers jumped to an 18-12 lead after one quarter with Kara Crowley hitting two three pointers and jump-starting the team with eight points.
Both Stanek and Jones hit from downtown in the second frame that saw the halftime score balloon to 35-20.
The Dodgers played deliberate ball down the stretch that saw thewm miss a few free throws and allow the Lady Cardinals some easy baskets when the game was pretty much out of reach.
The home team had at least five players score in every quarter leading coach Mark Dooley to say, "This was a total team effort. It was just a great game. It started when we put in a new defense (box and one) just this morning. The girls ran it very well for such short notice and very little practice. They also shared the ball unselfishly the entire game."
He added, "Our starters did a great job, but I can't say enough about our bench with Kennedy Stumpf and Adhley Citwood coming in and doing a great job both inside and out. Also Katie Cushman and Claire Binsfeld came in and gave us some good minutes."
If there was any downside, Dooley felt his team didn't box out as well as they should've and reached a little too much.
"Brodhead attacked the rim real well. They have a good program there and a very good coach (Brian Kammerer) who has them well prepared. This was a good test as it's posible we may meet them in the tournaments."
The Dodgers go to Richland Center Thursday and then on to Cuba City the following Monday for a huge test.
