Dodge-Point gymnasts fall to SW-CC-B

A limping Dodgeville-Mineral Point gymnastics team fell to visiting Southwestern-Cuba City-Ben-ton 125.775 to 116.075 Monday at the Dodgeville Middle School gymnasium.
Dodge-Point has two of their key varsity performers, Tori Palzkill and Martina Steffes, out with injuries. It is hoped that Palzkill will be able to return soon while Steffes suffered a season ending elbow injury.
"Tori and Martina are two strong bar workers. With both of them out with injuries we are focusing on increasing our skills on bars," pointed out Dodge-Point coach Julia Oellerich.
SW-CC-Benton swept both the vault and bars events and took first and third on floor and beam.
Dodge-Point's Lauren May was second on beam with an 8.15 and on floor with an 8.525. She also placed second in All Around at 32.25. SW-CC-Benton's Kelsie Goffinet nosed her out in All Around with a 32.6.
Other D-P scores were: vault-May 7.95, Alyssa Belling 7.6, Winndie Darrow 7.5, Miranda Weber 7.4, Claire Polinag 6.3; bars-May 7.65, Belling 6.7, Weber 6.0, Darrow 4.25; beam-Polinag 7.325, Belling 7.25, Weber 7.15, Darrow 6.45; floor-Belling 7.9, Darrow 7.45, Weber 7.3, Polinag 7.15; All Around-Belling 29.45, Weber 27.85, Darrow 25.65.
In JV competition, Dodge-Point's Hannah Mettlach scored 4.2 on beam and 5.3 on floor while Katy Henson scored 4.0 on beam and 5.25 on floor.
"We had a short turnaround from our meet in Mount Horeb on Saturday, so I was happy that the girls were able to increase their team score without any practice," Oellerich said.
She added, "Lauren May had a great night, placing on numerous events. She took second place on beam with her personal best score of 8.15, second place on floor also scoring a new personal best with an 8.525 and she also took second place in the all-around competition with a 32.25. We had many other girls beat their personal best scores, including Alyssa Belling on floor with a 7.9, Claire Polinag on beam with a 7.325, Hannah Mettlach on floor with a 5.3, and Katy Henson on floor with a 5.25."
"The girls had fun and it showed in their routines. We will continue to work on cleaning things up and incorporating new skills, the coach concluded."
