Eagles take own tourney title over Vikings
So, when the Barneveld girls basketball team knew they would be playing neighboring Mount Horeb for the championship of their own holiday tournament the girls knew it would not be an easy game.
The Eagles put the Vikings away 60-36 but there was a certain uneasiness until the Eagles took the lead to 30 late in the game.
"They played us better defensively than everyone but Oregon," said Barneveld coach Jim Myers. Oregon had fallen to the unbeaten Eagles earlier in the season.
Myers said it was a different kind of a game for the Eagles with the Vikings having so much knowledge about them in the tank.
It took a while to get started before the Eagles ran the score to 20-8 at the end of the first quarter. Things picked up in the second frame and Barneveld took a 37-17 halftime lead. Mount Horeb outscored them 11-8 in the third quarter when Myers felt the Eagles lost some of their focus. But, they regained it, pushed the lead to 30 before a couple three pointers by Jessie Fisher dropped the advantage to 24 at the end of the game.
The Vikings stuck a box and one defense on Hannah Whitish in an effort to slow the good shooting junior guard but she still managed to drill four three pointers and score 16 points.
"Hannah was able to set up other people for shots when she was the focus," Myers said. One of the recipients of her assists was Rachel Slaney who slashed into the middle enough to get 23 points.
"A lot of her points were hustle points," Myers said of Slaney's total.
"It was like playing a good team in our league," Myers said about the match-up. "They were prepared and that forced us to execute. We had to be sharp with our passing and that got us several nice baskets by getting the basketball to who was open."
"Our defense was strong again, too."
In the consolation game Platteville beat Pioneer Westfield 56-46.
Next up for the Eagles will be Pecatonica Thursday for Parents Night.
Saturday they will play in a classic at Loras College where they will face North Linn, IA.
