Cardinals survive strong test from W-S

One thing the Highland girls basketball team found out Tuesday is that they better not be too good of a host.
Wauzeka-Steuben came to play in the non-conference match-up and pushed the Cardinals until the end of the game. But, Highland worked through an injury to a starter and kept with the plan to turn back the Hornets 50-46.
Highland guard Jessica Kosharek was injured early in the first quarter and could not return. The injury was to her ankle and coach Josh Tarrell is listing her as day to day.
That might not be good news with an improving Potosi team heading to Highland Thursday.
But the Cardinals responded and took some stock in themselves, taking turns stepping up in Kosharek's absence.
"I was proud of the girls and how hard they fought to make up for losing Jess," Tarrell said. "They did not let the injury get inside their heads."
The Cards had seven girls dressed for the game and got some good minutes from freshman Kylie Esser and sophomore Karen McMannes.
"They played some big minutes," Tarrell said. "They did a good job taking care of the basketball and giving us a chance to finish."
With two girls, Bianca Yager and Caitlin Wienkes fouling out, the Cards were one girl from playing with four.
Wienkes led the Cardinals with 17 points and was assigned to guard Celina Giddings, the leading scorer for Wauzeka-Steuben.
"She had a nice game on both ends of the floor," Tarrell said about Wienkes.
When Wienkes got tired Brenna Bomkamp stepped up with seven of her 14 points in the third quarter.
Mackenzie Drury helped close out the game with six of her nine points in the final frame.
"It was a rough game and resembled football at times but the girls stayed with it," Tarrell said. "They gave a great effort all night."
Giddings had 14 and Molly Heisz 11 for Wauzeka-Steuben.
