Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

The other day (still in 2014) I was at a corner of the main street in
Dodgeville. There was a pretty good line of traffic coming from the north.
I would guess about 12 vehicles were in a string of traffic. Anyway three of
them turned off of the street and none of the drivers used a directional! I
could've pulled out and gone right like I had planned to if they would've.
Then one of the drivers put a left directional on and then turned right. It
must've been the cold weather that day that played with their heads!

Speaking of cold weather, I was coming out of the downtown Dodgeville
Kwik Trip on Tuesday after delivering papers to the store and I had to wait
to go out into traffic due to a rather large vehicle in front of me. Actually it
was a car, but it was pulling a motorboat. Now either the driver was confused
as to what time of the year it was (winter) or he was going to drive it
over the ice. To top things off, the driver headed north. If he would've headed
south I would've figured he was heading to a warmer climate!

That dreaded four letter word was said Sunday quite a few times - SNOW!
We got an inch or so on Saturday morning and then a few more inches on
Sunday PLUS more and more on Monday night! I probably have shoveled
the sidewalk outside of the Chronicle office as much in 2015 (4 days) as I
did in the entire winter of 2014. Hint - I shoveled once this winter in 2014
and someone else shoveled last winter (2014)!

I went to the Barneveld/Lancaster boys basketball game Friday night and
almost didn't make it there. It wasn't anything to do with weather or a problem
with my car. When I was just a couple miles outside of Barneveld I
almost nailed a deer that ran right in front of my car. If I had been one second
earlier, bang, kapow! They say timing is everything!

Barneveld is one of the few schools in our area that has a dance team. It
is made up of girls - Jessie and Hallie Amble, Abby Meyer, Kayla Hazen,
Jenna Peterson, Emily Sraubhaur and Sierra Eno. Well, Friday night at halftime
of the boy's basketball game, a group of boys did a dance routine and
did it very well - see above photo of a portion of the routine.

Longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott died of cancer last weekend at the
age of 49. He was an African-American who started with ESPN back in
1993. I think on Sunday everyone at ESPN who did any announcing that
day used the word BOOLYA - one that he coined and probably used sometime
in every broadcast. He won the "Jimmy V" Courage Award last year
after battling cancer three different times - winning two!

The shooting of two youngsters (6 & 8 years old) and the mother in
Montfort last week was horrifying. I went to the house on Sunday and as I
was taking photos Leah Linscheid, a Highland graduate and currently in the
news department a WISC-TV Channel 3 in Madison, appeared on the
scene. I probably hadn't seen her since her high school days in Highland. It
was good to see her and do a little catching up - even though it was pretty
cold outside. Due to the cold we cut our visit short and she had to do her
filming get back to the studio. We left each other saying we hoped we'd see
each other soon, but under better circumstances!
