Pointers are SWAL champs

The Mineral Point boys basketball team used a strong second half surge to post 85 points on the scoreboard compared to Boscobel's 48 Friday night.
In doing so, the Pointers earned their second straight undisputed SWAL conference title.
"To earn the undisputed title, especially this year, really says a lot about this team," said Pointer coach Dan Burreson. "We'll put our league up against any Division 3 league. And to earn it back to back really says a lot about our guys."
The Pointers used a 9-0 stretch midway through the first quarter to help hold a 22-17 lead at the end of one. During that key stretch, the Pointers got contributions from Tarek Oellerich, Turner Poad, and Joey Gorgen.
A 10-0 burst to start the second frame, five coming from Alec Schmitz, helped the Pointers extend their lead, but Boscobel came back strong to end the half, outscoring the hosts 10-3 over the final 3:38 to pull within 39-31 at the break.
The first half of the third quarter was back and forth before Mineral Point went on a 12-0 run that helped them hold a 63-41 lead entering the fourth. Schmitz had seven points in that stretch.
An impressive 22-7 offensive performance in the fourth saw the Pointers pull away for good. Bench players Justin Toay, Jordan Kittleson, Dylan MacGilvra, and Nate Eisenzimmer all tallied points down the stretch.
Ryan Latham led all scorers with 25 points for Boscobel.
The Pointers had four players in double digits--Oellerich 19, Sy Staver 17, Schmitz 16, and Gorgen 10.
"Once again we had great balance tonight with four guys in doubles and another with eight points," added Burreson. "In the second half, I thought we shared the ball as well as we have all year. We were also committed defensively and rebounded well."
"Jordan Kittleson and Steven Blume each gave us great minutes off the bench tonight," concluded the coach.
