Hannah Whitish, Rachel Slaney set new records
Sometimes the game dictates other things besides seeing how many points you can score against a struggling opponent.
Barneveld's girls basketball team worked with that Thursday when they outdistanced Black Hawk 72-34 in a Six Rivers East game. The starters played a little over two quarters and the bench took over to not only finish but keep the momentum going.
It was a night where two of the present Eagles surpassed some seemingly unreachable records.
Hannah Whitish, the heavily recruited junior guard put in four three-pointers to eclipse the previous mark for a career set by Maddi Laube. Hannah now has 73 baskets from three point land and finished the night with 17 points.
Senior "creator" Rachel Slaney had 24 markers which put her one point over the career total set by Inger Hodgson who played D1 basketball at South Dakota State. Slaney set the new mark at 1588 with the tournaments still to play.
It was also a night where Sarah Cannoy had a break out game with 11 points off the bench.
"She had a very good night," said Barneveld coach Jim Myers.
And, Mia Whitish put in nine points along with playing a strong floor game as she strives to get back to full strength after suffering a high ankle sprain.
"This was her third game back and she is still part time," Myers said. "But her performance was solid."
The Eagles flew to a 23-5 first quarter lead then slowed things down the second quarter as Black Hawk outscored them 11-5. A 27-10 third quarter more than put the game away.
"We had a good start then the second quarter we spent time working on some different things and didn't get very good looks," Myers said. "We refocused in the third quarter and got the shots we wanted."
Aleigha Sigafus had 21 points to lead Black Hawk.
"We let them get the ball inside to her too much," Myers said.
The Eagles got the top seed in their D5 Regional bracket and will host #5 Southwestern, a winner over Potosi Tuesday night, on Friday.
