Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Just before Lent began I received a "special" present from a special family.
Rachel Wahlin, a junior in high school brought me two chocolate doughnuts
from the "Crubaugh" bakery. When I tasted them and saw how big they were
I knew they weren't from the Dodgeville bakery and I was right. They came
from the "Crubaugh" bakery in Stoughton that is run by Brian's younger
brother Joe! I must admit they were pretty much like the ones from here, Jennifer - Rachel's mother- told me she was going to bring me some of Joe's
cookies. They are to die for! I'm pretty sure the Wahlin's lived in Stoughton
before moving to Dodgeville to know about Joe's bakery. Jennifer's husband
is a pilot for American Airlines. I hope they hold off on the cookies until Lent
is over as I gave up "sweets" (and that means no women too) until Easter!

Joe must've known those doughnuts were coming to me as the bag they
were in didn't have a logo on it. If it had a logo on it he probably figured I'd
just toss it doughnuts and all!

The "Four Amigos" - Bob Kratochwill, Terry Carroll, Dewey Christoph
and myself - were invited to perform a little skit last Thursday night at the
Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce banquet. Now I know what chamber director
Lynn Price meant when she said "she would get even"! We did kind
of a take off of "The Price is Right" and had Bill Wall (Kozelka & Wall
Clothing) as the "guinea pig". It seemed to come off OK with a few laughs
coming from the audience. Probably the most laugh came when we walked
in with Bob playing the maracas and us all dressed in Mexican hats and a
Mexican blanket over our shoulder. We did the "Three Amigos" hand routine
with a thrust at the end - not even close to being in sync of course! If you've
never seen the movie then you wouldn't get it! We can be seen above, but I
won't tell you which one is which one - but we also have Bob Page of Bob's
Bitchin' BBQ, Bill Wall and Lynn Price in the photo!

This Thursday through Saturday is state individual wrestling time. We have
a pretty good contingent from our immediate coverage area at the Kohl Center
in Madison those days. Iowa-Grant/Highland and River Valley will have
four representatives - Luke Nowak, Kyle Soderstrom, Sawyer Sarbacker and
Max Meylor (IG) with Zach Licht, Elijah Alt, Dustin Hatfield and Nate Jennings
(RV). Mineral Point has three - Scotty Pittz, Frank Baker and Ross
Siegenthaler. Dodgeville's representative is junior Brady Wetter, making his
third consecutive appearance there. Good luck to all the wrestlers. I hope to
see some state championships out of that group!

Tuesday night began the state tournament basketball quest on the girls side
of the coin. Area teams Barneveld, Dodgeville, Mineral Point and River Valley
all had byes for that first game and will begin play Friday night - all at
home except for River Valley, who is at Richland Center. Good luck to all
the teams on them getting to the Resch Center in Green Bay down the road
for state!

Basketball has been pretty good in our coverage area this season. Both
Dodgeville's boys and girls teams won conference championships as did the
Barneveld's girls, Mineral Point's boys and Pecatonica's boys. The boys
teams wrap up regular season play this Thursday night and begin the tournament
trail to the Kohl Center in Madison the following Tuesday!

The chamber of commerce promoted an open house honoring good friend
Florence Crubaugh at her Linens & Accents store in downtown Dodgeville
last Wednesday evening. Flo had been in business with "Linens" for 35 years.
She stopped in at the "chamber" breakfast Friday morning at the Red Room
and immediately said, "I'm here, but I don't know where I'm going next!"
