Pointers start slow, but handle Boscobel
But, thanks to a 15-0 third quarter spurt, the Pointers distanced themselves down the stretch to pull away for a 53-39 SWAL win.
Mineral Point was ice cold to start the game, nearly getting shut out before a Sydney Staver three pointer broke the drought with a minute left in the first quarter making the score 8-3.
The Pointers pulled even with Boscobel at 11 all, thanks in part to back to back three pointers from Clara Chambers, at the 4:33 and 2:37 marks, but the Bulldogs hit eight free throws in the second quarter and held an 18-15 halftime lead.
Mineral Point took the lead for good on a Chambers hoop with 5:15 to go in the third. This was part of the 15-0 stretch that featured nine points from Staver and six from Chambers.
The fourth quarter was quite lengthy as Boscobel shot 16 free throws to make their total charity stripe attempts 34 for the night.
Chambers led all scorers with her 20 points and Staver joined her in double figures with 16.
Kenzie Trumm was the top Bulldog with 15.
Friday was also Senior Night for the Pointers as they honored Natalie Chubb, Lexie Johnson, and Jena Pilling.
"It was nice to have the seniors play together a lot tonight," said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "We were able to put a lot of different combinations of players on the floor, which is helpful as we get close to the tournament."
"Our defense got us going in the third quarter. We couldn't buy a basket in the first quarter--we had good looks, but they just didn't fall. We came out with more intensity in the third," said the coach.
