Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I got a chance to see a pretty darn good boys basketball game Friday night
at River Valley when Dodgeville rallied at the end to beat their hosts 61-50
to take over sole ownership of the SWC lead. There was a great crowd
with the game having the same feeling as a tournament one.

There are only two games remaining before basketball tournaments start
for the boys and just one before the girls begin. Wrestling is into sectionals
too - and conference gymnastics is this weekend with sectionals next. The
winter sports season is winding down!

It's hard to think of downtown Dodgeville without Florence Crubaugh and
her Linens & Accents store. Her final day was Tuesday with a party at the
store on Wednesday. I remember working with her on advertising 35 years
ago when she opened in the basement of the "Ryall" building that now houses
Box Office Video. She moved upstairs and then across the street to her current
location. Daughter Terry Olson has a Vintage shop there now and will
expand into the entire store area. Flo is certainly one of the business ICONS
and will be missed!

Sunday was certainly a cold day. The Dodgeville Lions Club held its annual
Free Community Appreciation breakfast at the Dodger Bowl. Some 150 people
braved the cold and made it to the breakfast. I didn't do much work there,
but showed up before 8:00 a.m., left to go to church and then came back to
help clean up before noon. Any donations received will go to support the
Free Clinic!

I read this note on FACEBOOK from Barbra Thompson, former teacher at
Dodgeville High School.
After 41 years in public education, I have decided this will be my last
school year. I have been in Rockford, Il, at Auburn High School for the last
8 years as a School Guidance Counselor, 5 years before that at Beloit Memorial
as a special ed teacher in the English department and 28 glorious years
as a special ed teacher, coach, advisor, director, etc in Dodgeville, WI. I have
always tried to bloom and flourish where I am planted. I am so blessed. I am
grateful and thankful for all the experiences and individuals that have shaped
me to this point in my journey. Thank you to all. June will be here before I
know it. I am going to "be" in each and every day as it unfolds...pretty exciting.

Also - A week from Monday is the "Point Five" Band Concert celebrating
the 88 years Kiwanis has been in Dodgeville serving the community and the
100th anniversary of Kiwanis International. Point Five is a band based out
of Mineral Point. Tickets can be purchased at ERA Arthur Real Estate in
Dodgeville.

The photo above shows how kids learn from watching. Lexi Yager, daughter
of Paul and Jan (Johnston), decided she'd help roll up the wrestling mats
following Saturdays regional at Dodgeville High School. Paul, a wrestler for
Mineral Point High School in his day, said that it's in her blood!
