Pointer girls top Redbirds
The two teams were tied at 20 all, but Mineral Point came out with renewed intensity in the second half and was able to pull away for the 55-43 SWAL win.
Clara Chambers had the hot hand to start with six first quarter points as the visitors led 13-6 at the end of one.
"We were actually up 8-0 to start the game," said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "But then we started to get a bit sluggish in the second quarter. We were complacent, not boxing out, and missed several good looks at the basket where we didn't capitalize."
The Redbirds took advantage and outscored Mineral Point 14-7 in the frame to knot things at 20 all at the break. Six Darlington girls scored in the second period while the Pointers only mustered two field goals. Myah Aschliman and McKenzie Schmitz each hit a free throw right before the break to pull the Pointers even.
Roles reversed in the third quarter.
"We played with more intensity on both sides of the ball," said Wainwright. "We pushed the tempo. Sydney Staver got a couple of layups in transition and we went seven of eight from the free throw line. We were just more aggressive."
Six Pointers tallied points in the fourth quarter.
"We were up by 18 at one point and I pulled some kids because the game was physical and I didn't want to risk injury. We had good balance in the fourth quarter," said Wainwright.
Chambers was the top Pointer with 14. Staver added 11.
Callie Norton was the lone Redbird in double digits with 14.
