Panthers part of 1000 point celebration
Thursday the Iowa-Grant Panthers girls team had the opportunity to offer congratulations to one of the top players in the SWAL when Cuba City senior guard Chloe Pustina ripped the nets for her 1000th point.
Pustina, a four year starter for the Cubans who basically runs the show, needed five points for the mark. She got it in the second quarter on her first basket of the frame.
Pustina was congratulated by the Panthers and the fans from both teams then went on to finish the game with eight points while sitting out the fourth quarter with the rest of the Cuban starters.
The Cubans won the game 63-29 with eight girls scoring. Mollie Wedige led with 16 with Jessi Marti adding 15.
The Panthers stayed with their quest to improve each time out with a gutty effort against the SWAL leader who limited their last two opponents to 11 and 12 points. Taylor Jackson emerged as the IG scoring leader for the night with eight points and drained a pair of three pointers.
Jackson was joined in the three point effort by Haley Yelinek who also drained a pair of three pointers.
That shooting led the Panthers to their best scoring quarters of the night with 11 in the third and nine in the fourth.
Panther coach Craig Jenkins said it was an honor to be part of Pustina's 1000 point mark.
"We really think highly of her," Jenkins said about Pustina. "She understands her role and performs it. It is impressive to see how hard she works."
The Panthers stuck Emma Liddicoat on Pustina and Jenkins thought she defended her pretty well.
Knowing the Cubans are pretty much a complete package Jenkins said the girls set a goal of 30 points scored against their tough defense.
"We got to 29 so we were close," Jenkins said. "We played hard and I am proud of their effort."
"A lot of teams would look at playing them as something they had to do," said Jenkins. "But we didn't do that. The girls didn't put their heads down and just kept battling."
He added the perimeter shooting was good.
"We can shoot over zones pretty well but Cuba City plays a very tough man to man," said Jenkins. "Playing them makes you realize they are a very special team right now."
The Panthers are working at securing an upper division finish and are currently tied for fourth with Boscobel at 4-6. They have two games remaining with Mineral Point (8-2) and single games with Boscobel (4-6) and Fennimore (2-9).
