Dodgers drop Cubans to get back on track
Standing in the way was a ranked team in WIAA Division 4 at the Petitgoue gym in Cuba City. But they didn't stand there for long.
The Dodgers played four strong quarters of basketball, made some much needed free throws at the end and came away with a 63-55 win in non-conference play Tuesday.
Levi Nagel, a senior guard for the Dodgers, started fast and stayed with his hot hand all four quarters. His six first quarter points helped the Dodgers to a 15-10 lead.
The Cubans stayed with the Dodgers the second quarter as each team matched 14 points. Then Nagel and junior guard Trent Jones keyed a 20-9 third quarter for a comfortable 49-33 advantage after three. Nagel had 10 points and Jones 6.
The Cubans did their best to rally and outscored the Dodgers 22-14 the final frame but some clutch free throw shooting prevented a catch-up. Jones was six four six from the line while Ryan Raess and Jordan Larson iced both of theirs for a 10 for 10 frame. Nagel added a pair of baskets for good measure.
Nagel finished with 23 points and Jones added 18 for the Dodgers. The Cubans, who had 11 players score and a dozen play, were led by Zach Gaines with 12.
"Suffering a team loss to Lancaster may have been exactly what we needed for our team win over Cuba and going into the last stretch of the season," said Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack.
"We were concerned going into the game about their physical style of play and their ability to get second chance opportunities," Bohnsack said. "We left feeling very confident about how our team has come together defensively as the season has unfolded. Our help side defense was more effective than it had been in previous games."
Now comes a big challenge Friday when the Dodgers head to River Valley to take on the Blackhawks. Both teams are 6-1 in the SWC and the winner will move into first place alone.
