Free throws pave way for Pointers

There are many interesting statistics from Friday night's SWAL contest that saw the Mineral Point girls rally and hold off Riverdale for a 62-57 win, but the one that stands out perhaps most in the scorebook is free throw shooting.
The Pointers cashed in on 15 of 17 attempts at the charity stripe, while the Chieftains were just 2 of 5 on the night. Mineral Point was perfect from the line in the second half, hitting all 12 of its tries, while the only free throws Riverdale got came from Amanda Meister in the first half.
The Pointers got off to a hot start with a 6-0 stretch, featuring four points from Destinee Kruser. The rest of the quarter was back and forth with Clara Chambers hitting a three pointer at the horn to give the home team an 18-17 lead at the end of one.
Riverdale got hot from long range in the second quarter with Kayla Frazier hitting four three pointers to help the visitors hold a 32-28 halftime lead.
Sydney Staver scored Mineral Point's first six points of the second half, but five points each from Megan Kleist and Meister kept Riverdale in front for the first four minutes before Mineral Point went on a huge 16-2 run to close out the frame and take a 50-44 lead into the fourth quarter. Part of the scoring rally were Staver with six points, Kruser and Chambers with four each, and Carlie Qualley with two.
Even though the Pointers didn't score a field goal for the last four and a half minutes of the game, they went eight for eight from the free throw line and held off the Chieftain attack, despite three long range shots. Riverdale had 11 three pointers on the night.
The Pointers had four players in double digits--Chambers with 22, Staver 17, Qualley 11, and Kruser 10.
Chieftain Meister tied Chambers for game-high scoring honors with 22. Frazier joined her in double figures with 12 and Kleist added 11.
"Free throws were a huge difference tonight," said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "I also thought our ability to turn up our defensive pressure really created a lot of our offensive opportunities."
"Our team has been really drained and I told them that we needed to find something deep inside, and they did come up with that extra energy tonight."
"Carlie played very well and did a great job. Destinee had eight big rebounds, Natalie Chubb had six, and Carlie added five. We did a good job on the glass."
"I also like that Clara had ten assists. It showed we moved the ball well, and even though we missed some easy layups, we were making good passes," said the coach.
The Pointers are at Darlington Thursday and host Iowa-Grant Tuesday.
