Safety is key

By Kayla Barnes-kbarnes@thedodgevillechronicle.com

The recent accident on HWY 151 by Mineral Point involving seven
passengers, five of them being children should be a huge wake up call
for many parents and how to safely place their children in safety restraints.
I know carseats can be a challenge. You have to make sure that your
child is tightly placed in the seat so that if there is an accident, they
will not be thrown from them. But I always fear I have my son placed
in their too tight. My husband joked with me saying how there would
be no way my son could move let alone breathe, because of the way I
placed him in the seat.
I doubt many people have read (or kept) the instructions for carseats.
They seem to be in a thousand languages so it can be a challenge just
to find English. The hospital was very informative on our carseat about
how to place the handle all the way back when it is locked into the
car. The handle can prevent the carseat from doing what it was designed
to do. Also, make sure you hear a click when the carseat is
placed in its base to know that it is secure.
All these are simple ways to make sure your child will not be harmed
incase there is an accident. Our children are precious to us and I no
one would want to see their child in any danger. Hold them close and
keep them safe.
