Pointers stage comeback to top River Valley girls

It could easily be called a tale of two halves.
Mineral point found themselves down by 10 points during the first half of a non-conference girls basketball game with River Valley.
They did battle back to be on the short end of only a 23-19 score by the intermission.
The momentum they built just before half carried into the second half as they outscored the Lady Blackhawks 27-12 for a 46-35 win.
Senior Clara Chambers led the pointers with 17 points, 10 of which came in the second half.
Junior Syd Staver tallied eight of her 10 points in that second half too.
Five other Pointers scored in the win prompting coach Mitch Wainright to say, "Tonight we had 14 points off the bench. The last game we only had one. It makes a big difference when you get that many bench points."
River Valley senior sharpshooter Kylie Hoffman led all scorers on the night with 21 points. She came up with 12 in the first half. Also, she hit two from downtown.
Junior Taylor Briehl was their next leading scorer with seven.
"I felt we executed well in the first half," said River Valley coach Brent Johnson. "Our goal was to take Chambers out of the game and we did that pretty well in the first half. We wore down in the second half and they made some changes posting up more."
He said that "Staver is a nice player too. Their talent is exceptional. I can't complain about the effort our girls made. Kylie had an excellent game. We just missed too many shots."
Wainright admitted he made some adjustments at halftime that gave Chambers a chance to knock down some threes (she had three on the night).
"Also we posted up more and Clara kicked it out for a big three to Syd," he said. "We talked about going inside and out more tonight and the girls executed it pretty well."
