Barneveld girls solve Pointers 60-41

Barneveld more than doubled Mineral Point at 35-17 in the second half on their way to a 60-41 non-conference girls basketball win Tuesday night.
The Eagles took the lead about midway in the first half and never lost it.
A three pointer followed by a lay-in at the buzzer by Syd Staver pulled the Pointers to just a 25-24 deficit at the intermission.
Staver hit 10 of her team high 14 in that first half.
She was also given the job of guarding NCAA Division 1 Nebras-ka recruit Hannah Whitish. She held her to four points in the first half.
Hannah Whitish finished with 13 as the Eagles leading scorer.
Her cousin Mia Whitish added 12, also with nine coming in period two.
Teegan Pickarts was the third Eagle to reach double figures. She had nine of her 11 in the second half and was deadly from mid range.
"Mineral Point is a good team," said Barneveld coach Doug Pickarts. "At halftime we talked about how many open cutters we had and because we were dribbling unnecessarily too much side to side we didn't see them. We did a better job of finding them in the second half."
He added, "These kids are very unselfish. They don't care who gets points. And our defense really picked up in the second half when we focused on picking the up at half court."
The Eagles held Pointer Clara Chambers to six points on the night.
"We used a match-up zone and had kids focus on her all night. They took away her shot and kept her from driving a lot."
He mentioned the bench play saying, "We are looking for contributers off the bench and tonight we got some points from several plus other contributions in spelling our starters."
Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright said, "They made several runs in the first half. We panicked, but then settled down and made some runs of our own. Syd hit a big layup as the half ended to pull us to within one."
"They hit some really big shots in the second half," he added. "We did a pretty nice job on Hannah and they did a nice job on Clara. Syd guarded Hannah and with her length she can guard anyone out front. She can also guard anyone in the post."
"Clara didn't have her best shooting night. She didn't get very many open looks and they cut down her driving inside," Wainwright said. "But she did so many other thing well."
"This was just 36 minutes of honest to goodness effort."
