Barneveld boys open with win at Fennimore

Keyed by a 28-point effort from guard Matthew Myers, the Barneveld boys basketball team - under a new head coach (Jim Myers) - got off on the right foot in non-conference play this season with a 69-45 win over Fennimore of the SWAL.
It was Bryce Arneson who scored the Eagles first three baskets with Malcom Trrf hitting a couple after that. Then Myers started his scoring.
The game was tight throughout the first half, but the Eagles put a string of points together in the final four minutes and held a 36-23 advantage at the intermission.
"We changed our defense after Fennimore took a time out at that point in the first half and got a couple of turnovers that turned into baskets," said coach Myers. "Matthew got his hands on a couple of transition baskets that helped too."
The second half saw the Eagles pull away with a 33-22 scoring difference.
Besides Myers hitting double figures, Michael Zouski chipped in 11.
On the boards, Lucas Evans, a 6'5" junior, pulled down 11 rebounds with eight of them coming defensively. Also Arneson grabbed eight on the night.
"This was a nice start to our season," Myers said. "We got to play a lot of kids and that's what we wanted to do. I felt we shot freethrows extremely well (the Eagles made all eight of their tries)."
"I felt the defense played well and we didn't have a lot of turnovers for a first game," he concluded.
Fennimore's Reid Larson led his team with 14 points that included four three pointers.
