5 give it their best shot

Highland basketball coached looked down his bench in last week's season opener with Iowa-Grant and knew one thing.
There would be no disappointment over playing time.
Highland, perhaps the smallest school in Wisconsin that puts competitive teams on the field every season will be doing that in girls basketball as soon as more get healthy and eligible.
But tonight he (Tarrell) had just five eligible girls in uniform and about the only things he could tell them is don't get hurt and don't foul out.
To Highland's credit they played every minute of the game, through the highs and through the lows. They walked off the floor knowing the Panthers knew they were in a battle.
The Cardinals were within 11 points at halftime but Panthers coach Craig Jenkins put a little wrinkle into the defense and it turned the tide, allowing the Panthers to get some baskets off the trap and roll to a 72-48 win.
"Haile Kosharek got a big three at the halftime buzzer so we knew we had to make some changes," I-G's Jenkins. "They were not going to quit."
So he pulled out the 1-3-1 with a half court trap. The young Cardinals were not used to that defense and the result were several costly turnovers.
"Our girls fought hard and played well the first half," Tarrell said. "We hit some threes and were able to stay within 10."
"The second half we didn't adjust well to the 1-3-1-and we got tired. We didn't rotate well but I was proud of how the girls kept fighting."
Bailee Rose had 15 points to lead Highland while Kylie Esser added 14 and Halie Kosharek had 12.
Emma Liddicoat's 17 led Iowa-Grant while Hailey Yelinek buried four three pointers and had 15. Mariah Ginter came through with 14.'
Eight Panthers scored.
"I liked our balance," Jenkins said. "I felt we played very well and made some smart decisions. All the girls stepped up and played defense."
