Vikings have trouble containing D1 Young

While the Mount Horeb/Barne-veld Vikings were unable to finish many of their drives that wasn't the case for Monona Grove's Division 1 running back Toren Young.
Young, who has committed to Iowa, rolled for 266 yards on 23 carries and turned in a trio of touchdowns to lead the Silver Eagles to a 27-20 non-conference win at  Mount Horeb Friday. Young scored on runs spanning 71, 5 and 43 yards.
Vikings coach Travis Rohrer credited Young with creating two explosive drives.
"Part of the reason for those drives was us fitting the drives incorrectly," Rohrer said. "But the rest of the reason was the fact they have a back that is going to play Division 1 football at Iowa."
Offensively the Vikings piled up 406 yards through the air and 143 on the ground for a strong performance but only three drives ended up in the end zone. Quarterback Max Meylor ran in for one and hit Matt Blome and Jackson Rose for a score apiece and Blome ran in a conversion for the 20 points.
"When you put up over 500 yards and 31 first downs yet come away with only three scores that is usually the result of turnovers," said Rohrer. "That was not the case Friday. We simply could not finish our drives inside the red zone."
That problem has been receiving attention this week as the Vikings prepare for their next outing with Stoughton Friday.
"We are addressing that," Rohrer said. "Missed opportunities are a killer and it certainly was the death of us Friday."
He added the coaching staff will also emphasize that teams playing the Vikings have to earn their scores.
"We were disappointed in the final result but as coaches we believe our young men represented the program well and displayed a ton of heart," Rohrer said. "They stayed the course and had opportunities to pull out another comeback win."
Meylor went to the air and hit on 27 of 41 attempts for 406 yards and two touchdowns. Blome carried for 126 yards on 30 attempts and broke off one for 17 yards. Tristan Simpson got the call six times for 23 yards.
Rose led the receiving with eight grabs for 212 yards. Trey Laube hauled in seven for 89 and Blome six for 52. Terek Nesheim and Graham Schloesser both caught three for 37 and 19 yards.
Defensively Austin Stram led with 11 tackles and Cam Krantz had nine. Zach Stecklein added six tackles with three of them for losses. He also had two sacks.
The Vikings are back in action tomorrow night when they head to Stoughton.
"They are very big," Rohrer said about the Norsemen. "Their quarterback has a live arm and is able to make plays outside the pocket. Defensively they are very stout up front and force you to earn everything you get. It will be a huge road test with both of us looking for our first win of the season."
