Along the Ad Routes

Sunday we had the second (and final) Dodgeville Lions Club Flea Market
& Antique Show inside Ley Pavilion at Harris Park. The crowd reached the
700 mark - that really helps the vendors with that number attending and it
doesn't hurt the money raised by the Lions for admissions either! It eventually
goes to very worthy causes, such as building shelters at various parks,
fixing dugouts at Harris Park, scholarships and a lot, lot more!

Speaking of great fundraisers for the community. The Dodgeville Kiwanis
Club held their annual chicken barbeque last Thursday and had a great
turnout and the chicken was pretty darn good. That is another club that helps
the area through projects. They give out a lot of scholarships and help school
kids and hand out a lot of money each and every year! Check out the above
photo for some of the chicken barbeque attendees. Note the guy on the right!

If you are looking for a "Blast of the Past" then the Iowa County Fairgrounds
in Mineral Point is where you want to be Saturday and Sunday, August
29 and 30. That's when the Iowa County Antique Collectors Club will
hold their annual "Power Show" with a lot of tractors plus threshing and log
splitting like they did in the olden days!

The 4 Amigos ventured to Mount Horeb to eat breakfast Saturday at Spring
Garden Restaurant. We ran into a friend - Chuck Minsky - who we see there
everytime we go there. Anyway, Chuck just recently accepted the principal
job at Mount Horeb High School, a place he served as principal before. He
is doing this while the current principal is on leave.

Quite a few schools have already begun - like Highland. Many will start
on Tuesday, September 1. The Iowa County Fair is late this year with Labor
Day not being until Monday, September 7 - so youngsters will already be in
school when the fair begins on Thursday, September 3. The fair usually signals
the end of summer even though it doesn't officially end until September
22.

Last weekend's "Dodgeville Days" went over pretty good. it was really
windy each day - Thursday through Sunday - but vendors who had tents outside
on the street gutted it out. The Dodgeville baseball players who were
part of the 16-18 Babe Ruth World Series in Oregon signed a bunch of baseballs
for fans on Saturday. We sure could use more retail businesses downtown
to make it even better. Maybe by next year!

The Green Bay Packers received a huge blow Sunday in the first quarter
of their preseason game when Jordy Nelson went out with a knee injury. I
haven't officially heard the extent of his injury, but anything to the knee isn't
good! The Pack has been the preseason favorite to win the Super Bowl, but
without Nelson that may be a stretch. And he's one of the really good guys!
