Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Last Wednesday I was loading Chronicles into the trunk of my car to take
to the west end of the county to post offices and stores. I filled my last cart
of papers full pretty high as (being a man) I only wanted to make one trip!
Anyway, when I got to the trunk of my car and set down the cart filled with
newspaper it fell over with each bundle hitting the ground. There was no
damage to the papers and I proceeded to start picking each bundle up. A
young girl and (I'm guessing) her younger brother were riding their bikes
along the street. She (about 10-12 years old) proceeded to walk my way to
see if I needed any help - that was very nice of her! I politely told her thanks,
but I had it ok - I needed to stack them in a certain order as to how I was
going to take them out of my vehicle. Now that young girl is going to make
something of herself!

With the temperatures in the 80s and 90s it's hard to believe that kids will
be outside playing football in pads! I was at the Dodgeville/Iowa-Grant/Pecatonica-
Argyle/Belleville scrimmage last Friday evening and it got pretty
warm. It's a good thing it was only a scrimmage and the kids got a chance to
take water breaks quite often! I then went to the Dodgeville Elementary
School for the play "Jack and the Beanstalk". I don't know how the kids
could take the heat in the school either - I think I lost 10 pounds just by being
at those two things!

This weekend - starting with Thursday - will be "Dodgeville Days"
throughout Dodgeville. There will be street sales then the Dodgeville Kiwanis
Club's annual Chicken BBQ is from 4:30-7:00 p.m. inside Ley Pavilion
at Harris Park. Then, Friday and Saturday there will be more street sales and
other events, including face painting, autographs signed by the five
Dodgeville baseball players who played in the Babe Ruth World Series in
Oregon and other fun things. Sunday everything culminates with the
Dodgeville Lions Club's 2nd Flea Market and Antique Show of the summer
inside Ley Pavilion at Harris Park from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. - there will be
Lioness famous pies for sale there too!

The Dodgeville Knights Home Talent baseball season ended Sunday at
Verona at the hands of a Knights' former pitcher Kyle Olson. They made it
to the section's semi-finals though, so that was a plus. Verona now faces Hollandale
to see who gets to the "Final Four".

If you are looking for a "Blast of the Past" then the Iowa County Fairgrounds
in Mineral Point is where you want to be Saturday and Sunday, August
29 and 30. That's when the Iowa County Antique Collectors Club will
hold their annual "Power Show" with a lot of tractors plus threshing and log
splitting like they did in the olden days!

I've had several people question me about bicyclists crossing the street at
stop signs when the driver is on or off of them. It is true they are motorists
when sitting on them and pedestrians when walking their bikes across - check
