A 'shop local' endorsement

By Brooke Bechen-bbechen@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Last week I attended the Dodgeville City Council meeting where I learned that a new business will be opening in Dodgeville early 2016. Although one alderman disagreed with the idea of this new business, it did not bother me that this new business would be a gun shop, where residents can go in, speak to someone known in the community that is also well versed in the products that he is selling.
To me, the acceptance of this new business was a no brainer. The council was assured that proper regulations and permits would need to be approved and that the federal government would be an important player in getting this business qualified to serve the people of Dodgeville and Iowa County.
I am a supporter of shopping local and supporting local businesses. Although I won't be frequenting the gun shop as I do not own a gun, I think it's wonderful that local people will be able to go and purchase items from a local business instead of a big box store.
Coming up next week is Dodgeville Days, which includes sidewalk sales in downtown Dodgeville. This is an opportunity for residents to come downtown, see what Dodgeville has to offer and to shop local.
Take advantage of the local businesses that communities have, not only in Dodgeville but in every community. Our small businesses are a great asset to us!
