Along the Ad Routes
By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com
we didn't realize or another location we didn't realize. The other day
Dodgeville Chamber Executive Director Lynn Price came to lunch at the Red
Room with "our gang" and invited Sharon Shea to come along. Sharon is
one of the secretaries at the chamber office. I have known Sharon for a long
time and we conversed a lot at lunch as she sat across from me. Anyway,
later in the afternoon after the two returned to the chamber office the phone
rang. Sharon answered it her usual pleasant way saying, "Good afternoon
Dodgeville Chronicle can I help you?" The person on the other end of the
call really got a laugh out of it as it was Joyce Evans, another of the secretaries
at the chamber! Now I don't know if we have to pay Sharon for answering
the phone that way or if this is just "another of the great services the
chamber has to offer!"

Actually with two of our employees not in the office - Kayla due to having
a baby and Brooke on vacation - it probably was a good thing that we had
Sharon volunteer to answer the phone for us. The only problem was that she
wasn't at our office when she did so!

Last week a box of cookies from the (my not so favorite) place down the
street appeared on my counter at the Chronicle. They came from Arnette
Small, owner of Arnette's Country Grooming, a pet care person who lives
near Edmund. On the box it said, "Treats from Arnette Small - thank you for
11 years of service and make sure Mike gets a smiley face cookie!" To tell
you the truth, the smiley face cookies went before I got one, but that's OK -
I have to watch my figure!

I have been using the orange flags a lot when crossing the street. It seems
to be working fine as long as people remember to take one! The other day I
was crossing and so was someone without a flag. They stood waiting for traffic
to stop, but as soon as I grabbed a flag and walked out, the traffic came
to a halt!

I want to mention something about bicyclists at the intersections. I had
someone on their bike at an intersection so I did not stop for them. There
were two youngsters at another intersection off of their bikes, so I stopped
to let them cross. The first one is considered a motorist as they were on their
bike. When walking a bike across, you are considered a pedestrian! The law
is when your feet are off the ground you are considered a motorist. When
your feet are on the ground you are considered a pedestrian.

Speaking of bicyclists and observing rules. I was following two bicyclists
along a street and we all came to a stop sign at the same time. I, being in a
car, stopped for the stop sign, but the two bicyclists just looked both ways
and proceeded to keep on going. I will give them that they looked both ways,
but I'm pretty sure they are supposed to stop at stop signs too!

I was out to the Don Q Inn Motel for Ron Dentinger's book signing Sunday.
He gave $5 of every book he sold to the Iowa County Humane Society. It's
too bad he didn't have a better turnout, but he did sell some books. In fact,
he even autographed one for the Dodgeville Chronicle that we will have on
display here. Inside he wrote: "When I came to Dodgeville, I found out the
Dodgeville Chronicle was published weekly. It wasn't until I read one that I
found out just how weakly it was!" (see photo above of Ron sitting with good
friend Bob McNeill, one of the first people he met in Dodgeville)
