Pointers tame Iowa-Grant this time


Mineral Point and Iowa-Grant had battled just a couple weeks ago on the softball diamond and Monday night's outcome was very different than the first meeting.
Iowa-Grant took the first matchup of the season rather convincingly 9-3, but this time, the Pointers found revenge in the form of a 9-8 victory on the Panthers' home turf in Cobb.
Offense was plentiful for both squads as the teams totaled 22 hits, including six extra base ones.
Point got on the board first with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Carlie Qualley singled to bring home Clara Chambers and Qualley scored on an error.
The Panthers answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, the first run coming thanks to a groundout by Brea Stanton.
The Pointers would be held scoreless through the next three innings as Iowa-Grant plated four runs. A solo Kylie Moneypenny homerun was a highlight in the third inning.
Mineral Point pulled within one in the top of the 5th as they scored three, and rallied for good in the top of the 7th with three more. Kayla Lindholm had an RBI double, followed by a groundout by Megan Blume, and an RBI single from McKenzie Schmitz.
Savannah Lawinger got the win for the Pointers, striking out one, walking one, and surrendering 12 hits.
Stanton took the loss, giving up nine hits and nine runs, and just one walk. She struck out four.
For the Pointers, Elise Ames was 2x4 with two singles and she scored twice.
Clara Chambers was 1x3 with a triple, 2 RBIs, and she scored two times.
Rebekah Ottoway was 2x4 with a triple and single that scored one run.
Carlie Qualley was 2x3 at the plate with two singles scoring one run.
Kayla Lindholm went 2x4 with a single and a double and had 2 RBIs.
Blume and Schmitz had an RBI each as well.
For the Panthers, Lauren Winkler went 2x3 at the plate with two singles and she scored twice.
Taylor Liddicoat was 2x4 with a single and double and had an RBI.
Hannah Stevens went 2x4 with two singles and she scored twice.
Moneypenny was 2x4 with a homerun and an RBI.
Stanton had four RBIs.
