Pointers come close at Fennimore

No matter what the Mineral Point baseball team did at Fennimore they could not get over the hump.
The Golden Eagles took a quick two run lead in the first with both coming on an error.
The Pointers cut the margin in half with a run in the third as Tarek Oellerich doubled and scored on a single by Gabe Ottoway.
Fennimore plated three in the third on a hit and another error.
Again the Pointers cut the lead to one with one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Joey Gorgen reached on an error and scored on an error in the third. Dylan MacGilvra's hit was the big blow in the fifth after an error and a fielders choice.
Fennimore got the insurance runs they needed in the sixth on a single, walk, sacrifice and a single.
Oellerich and Sy Staver both doubled for the Pointers. Designated hitter Gabe Ottoway was 3x3 and MacGilvra was 2x2.
Alec Schmitz also had a single for the Pointers.
MacGilvra started and went three innings. He fanned two, walked four and gave up six runs, three earned.
Brant James went the last three, walking two, giving up three hits and two runs, both earned.
This week the WBCA rankings had the Eagles ranked number one in Division 4.
"I still feel we are really close where we need to be, but we just need to continue to get better," said Pointer coach Dan Burreson. "We have been ok in all phases of the game: hitting, pitching and fielding but in our league we need to be more than ok at least in one of the three areas."
He added that Ottoway and MacGilvra both had good days at the plate.
"Sy did a good job at short and both our pitchers threw well," Burreson said.
