Redbirds tip Pointers in extra frame
Darlington decided the 5-5 tie in the eighth when they sent in two runs that remained unanswered to win 7-5.
Six hits in the first two innings gave the Pointers a quick 4-0 lead. Tarek Oellerich and Sy Staver both singled to open the game and scored on a single by Gabe Ottoway, Ottoway advanced and scored on an infield out.
Oellerich singled with two outs in the second frame and advanced on a steal. Staver's hit made it 4-0.
But Darlington came alive after two scoreless innings and hung a five spot on the board. Jason Singer and Ben Muhlstein singled in runs and another scored on a sac fly by Jesse Stortz. Slade Norton unloaded a two run single to help swell the lead to 5-4.
An error to open the fifth and an rbi double by Joey Gorgen tied the game for the Pointers. It stayed knotted at five until Brayden McDonald singled in two runs the Pointers couldn't answer.
The Pointers tried, though. Zach Cummings walked and Dylan Macgilvra singled but could not score.
Ottoway took the loss. He fanned five, walked three and gave up 12 hits.
Oellerich, Staver and Gorgen all went 2x4. Macgilvra, Ottoway and Alec Schmitz all had one hit.
"They made more plays than we did and did a better job putting the ball in play," Mineral Point coach Dan Burreson said about the Redbirds.
"We made some nice plays to keep ourselves in the game. Turner Poad threw out a runner trying to advance to third and Alec Schmitz gunned down the go ahead run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Sy made a couple nice plays at short and Tarek at first," Burreson said.
"We need to find some consistency at the plate, but that will come with repetition. We hit the ball well earlier, but way too many called third strikes. Just a lot of little things right now, but we need to correct them and move forward," Burreson said.
