Dodgers open SWC season with win
The game was the SWC opener for both teams.
Trent Jones drove in the winning run in the sixth when his double plated Levi Nagel who had singled. Nagel accounted for three runs, reaching base when he was hit by a pitch in the first and scoring on a hustle play, never stopping running from second on a ground out by Brian Simmons, walking and scoring on a hit by Simmons in the second and then accounting for the winning run.
Some wildness by starter Andrew Gander created five walks in the second inning that sent in two runs.
The Hornets kept chipping away starting with a home run over the left field fence by Austin Haas that tied the game in the second.
They picked up three more in the sixth on a walk, two hits and an infield out.
They came close to setting things even in the top of the seventh when two runners scored on a double and outfield collision but Simmons, who was on in relief of Cole Sullivan, ended things with a strikeout.
Gander had more success at the plate than he did on the mound. He went 3x4 and scored twice. Aaron Sanders was 2x4 and knocked in two runs.
Jordan Olson was 2x2 for the Dodgers with a pair of doubles.
Simmons had three rbis and Jones two.
Sullivan got the mound win with five strong innings. He fanned eight, walked three and gave up three hits.
Simmons fanned three and walked one in his two innings of work.
The Dodgers are now 3-1 and will travel to Prairie du Chien Friday.
