Along the Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I have written quite often about people driving vehicles and "not stopping"
for pedestrians in the crosswalks. I have received quite a few compliments
about writing these with people saying "now they are stopping for me"! They
thank me! The other day about 8:15 a.m. I was attempting to cross the main
street in Dodgeville at the corner of the courthouse to go to Cobblestone Coffee
House to grab a Sugar-Free Mint to be in The Chronicle (it was still Lent
and I gave up sweets). Anyway there were five WISCONSIN licensed cars
heading along the street from my right. Usually I step out into the street and
force them to stop, but this time I decided to see if any of them would stop.
Guess what? None of them did! Quite often when I test people, it's the last
car in the line that stops, but this time Nada, nix, nein, none, etc! But then,
later on, I tried crossing a block to the south - Wells Fargo Bank to Bob's
BBQ - and there was a woman waiting to cross on the other side of the street
- so I immediately walked out in front of an oncoming car! It stopped. I said
to her that sometimes you just have to take things ino your own hands. She
said "better you than me" - as she was afraid to walk out! I suppose if I was
to get hit doing that I would be 20% at fault just for being there like vehicle
accident "victims" are!

Oh, and awhile back I received the above stop sign cartoon and figured
now was a good time to use it!

I hope everyone had a Blessed and Happy Easter. Pat's kids and grandkids
and I made a trip to the east - all the way to Ridgeway - to Hi Point Steak
House. This was my first time there and everything was really good. I was
impressed especially with the service and how fast they brought fresh items
to each and every spot. We ran into quite a few people we knew - some from
further away and some close by. After eating we spent a good amount of time
outside in back where the youngsters played and pitched some horseshoes
while we sat around talking. It was a good day without talking about work
pretty much by anyone!

How about those Badgers - meaning the men's basketball team. They "Beat
the Unbeaten" in Kentucky, who was going for a 40-0 season, but because
of the Badgers "TEAM" they fell two games short! I don't know if I will get
anything into this column about the National Championship game on Monday
night, but I have a real good feeling about beating Duke! Those Badgers
just don't seem to get rattled and have enough left in the tank at the finish
for a strong finish!

Last Saturday was brother Pat's 70th birthday. He's the patriarch of the
Reilly Family. He received quite a few cards here at the Chronicle office and
I'm sure he got a bunch of "wishes" on FACEBOOK! Now that it's baseball
season, so we all know where his big interest will be until the snow flies!

Don't forget that the Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships is just down
the road - April 18th at Harris Park. If you have an inkling to help out, the
chamber could sure use your help!
