River Valley turnaround keys win over Dodgers
Blackhawks coach Tim Eastlick knew something had to change.
River Valley didn't down Wetter completely--he scored a third touchdown in the third quarter--but they did slow him down while getting their offense going which resulted in a 32-22 Blackhawk win in a key SWC match-up.
"We did a better job in the second half tackling Wetter lower and just trying to take some of the steam out of his runs," Eastlick said. "He is a very nice looking running back."
While the Dodgers relied mostly on their talented running back....Wetter had 174 yards on 35 attempts and probably most of Dodgeville's plus yardage...the Hawks were about as balanced as any team could be.
River Valley ran for 156 yards and passed for 155 more to keep the Dodgers guessing all night.
"We did well offensively with our running and passing game. Our ability to run/pass was tough for them to adjust to. This allowed us to keep them guessing what we were going to do next," Eastlick said.
River Valley scored first when Cole Eastlick found a seam and took a Beau Solomon pass 51 yards to score. Alex Shifflet kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead at the 7:13 mark of the opening quarter.
Wetter scored just after the second quarter started at 11:15 and carried the ball three yards. Jordan Olson kicked the conversion to tie things up.
Wetter added a second score with a five yard run with two minutes left in the second quarter. Olson's kick made it 14-7.
Just after the half Elijah Alt bolted in from the six at 11:08 to make it 14-12.
With 9:05 the River Valley defense came up big when Alex Shifflet picked off a pass from Jordan Larson and rolled 43 yards to score, making it 19-14.
The Hawks got another score at 6:25 when Solomon passed to Lucas Price for a 43 yard touchdown and a 25-14 lead.
Wetter came back for a score and a two point conversion to cut it to 25-22 but Cole Eastlick caught his second touchdown pass of the night, a 22 yarder from Soloman, and Shifflet's kick made it 32-22.
The running game for the Hawks was keyed by the two pronged attack of Alt and Wyatt Schauf with a little Cole Eastlick thrown in.
"Elijah and Wyatt both ran hard for us and allowed us to be very balanced." Eastlick said. The offensive line has started to really put it together and continues to improve game to game."
Alt ran 14 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Schauf carried nine times for 56 yards and Eastlick gained 24 on four attempts.
Solomon keyed the passing game and made Eastlick and Price his main targets.
"Beau is really starting to understand the concept of short balls early lead to deep scores later in the game," Eastlick said. "Luke and Cole did a great job in their route running and Alex Shifflet didn't have any catches but he draws another defender in coverage."
Eastlick caught three for 82 yards and two scores while Price had three for 73 yards and one touchdown.
The River Valley defense also responded while making some big plays.
"Defensively we definitely were the bend don't break group on Friday night," Eastlick said. "We had many key defensive plays throughout the game. The sack by Cole Mahoney was very big (Mahoney got to Larson in the fourth quarter to snuff a drive), Alex Shifflet's two picks and a score were huge for us. Drew Bodendein was solid in the pass coverage scheme and Nathan Palmer made a great play down field on a tipped ball for an interception.
The Hawks picked off four passes in the game.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack felt the two teams were equal and that something had to happen for one to get the advantage. He pointed to penalty yards as a key factor.
"In a game of two equally matched teams the one who forces more turnovers and can capitalize on the opponent's mistakes is going to win the game," Bohnsack said. "Unfortunately for Dodgeville we had a season high in penalties (10 for 110 yards). We must give credit to River Valley for finding some of our weaknesses and executing their assignments."
Bohnsack liked the way both teams went at each other.
"I am pleased that it was still a hard hitting football game and both teams made it entertaining until the final horn," he said.
"Highlights for us was our kicking game (Jordan Olson and the kick cover team averaged 56 yards on 4 kickoffs with a 12.5 yard return average). Leading Tacklers were Christian Shepler, Bryce Olson, Ryan Raess and Andrew Evenson."
The Blackhawks travel to Lancaster this Friday.
"The Arrows will be a great test for us," Eastlick said. "They are the cream of the conference and area team that will play deep into the playoffs this fall."
The Dodgers will entertain Prairie du Chien.
