Panthers fourth in tourney, split in SWAL play

Iowa-Grant's girls volleyball team got to the championship bracket of their own tournament Saturday and grabbed a fourth place finish.
The Panthers finished second in their pool, beating Seneca 25-19, 25-20; New Glarus 25-7, 25-14; and losing to Dodgeville 25-17, 25-20.
In the championship semis, the Panthers lost to Portage 23-25, 25-23, 15-11. In the third place match they lost to Dodgeville 25-17, 25-17.
Statistical leaders for the day for the Panthers were:
Kills - Emma Liddicoat - 25, Kylie Moneypenny - 23, Kristin Bingham - 15, Haley Yelinek - 13
Blocks - Mariah Ginter - 4
Aces - Haley and Taylor Liddicoat both with 5
Assists - Taylor Liddicoat - 80
Digs - Taylor Jackson - 54, Emma Liddicoat -- 26, Haley Yelinek -- 24
"It is always our goal to get to the championship bracket, but really wanted to finish first or second," said coach Marla Simon. "We had a pretty good morning going 2-1, but meeting Dodgeville in the last pool play match we made to many service errors and just other mental errors."
After a break, play resumed for the afternoon session.
"Then we come back to play Portage in a cross-over match in the championship pool, and went three with them. I was happy with the way we played a really good team and had our chances to beat them," Simon added. "They definitely were bigger then us, but Kylie Moneypenny had her best match of the day and I feel our defense of Taylor Jackson, Emma Liddicoat and Haley Yelinek did a good job digging balls in the back row. So, a good match with them that I was hoping would carry over into our last match for third place with Dodgeville as we didn't play well against them earlier. "
But it wasn't to be.
"Unfortunately we didn't get it together to face Dodgeville the second time and lost in two which was kind of disappointing," Simon said. "It was a good day of volleyball but we just needed to push a little harder and be better mentally to get another win."
Last week the Panthers split in SWAL action, losing to a ranked Southwestern team and beating Boscobel.
"Southwestern had a really strong hitter in Michelle Budden, who was hard for us to stop when in the front row, but we were able to capitalize while she was in the back row and that's how we took one set from them.," Simon said. "Taylor Liddicoat had a really nice night with her setting and playing defense as well as serving."
Budden registered 22 kills and four blocks for the Wildcats.
Emma Liddicoat had seven kills and 10 digs for the Panthers while Taylor Liddicoat put up nine assists and served two aces.
Kylie Moneypenny had two blocks.
The Panthers lost their first set to Boscobel 19-25 then swept the next three for the win.
Scores were 25-21, 25-16 and 25-16.
"Three straight missed serves in the first set, kind of set the tone for that set and we dropped that one," Simon said. "But we rebounded back and played really good team volleyball to hold off Boscobel, who was very aggressive and scrappy.
Emma Liddicoat had 11 kills, three aces and 22 digs for the Panthers.
Georgie Faull and Kylie Moneypenny both had 10 kills and Moneypenny had two blocks.
Taylor Jackson got 27 digs and Taylor Liddicoat had 30 assists.
Haley Yelinek had three aces.
"Emma had a nice night with her offense and was very strong defensively too," said Simon. "So, it was nice to finally get a win after a pretty tough stretch with the upper teams of our conference."
