Pointer volleyball wins bracket at Hornet invite
The Pointers were one of sixteen teams at the Richland Center Tournament, and only lost one game. Following the loss, Mineral Point went on to win the remainder of their matches, which allowed them to take first place in the Silver Bracket.
The loss to Waunakee started the day, falling 22-25 and 17-25. Sydney Staver had one ace and eight assists, Jessica Schultz led the way with five kills and three blocks, and Elise Ames added five digs.
That loss was the lone blemish for the Pointers as they responded nicely to finish the day.
Their first victim was North Crawford, winning 25-21 and 25-14. Schultz again led the kill attack with 11. Clara Chambers had six kills, one block, and one ace. Sadie Pethel also tallied six kills and one ace. Staver set for 21 assists and had one ace. Carly Tibbits and Jalissa Weier had one ace each, and Ames added three digs.
The Pointers then beat Belleville 25-20 and 25-22. Staver had two aces and fifteen assists, Chambers notched eight kills and three digs, Schultz added five kills, and Natalie Chubb also spiked for five points.
Mineral Point had a close battle with Reedsburg, defeating the Beavers 25-21 and 25-22. Schultz was again the kill leader with seven and she added one block. Weier tallied three aces and four kills, Chambers had one block and five digs, and Staver added twelve assists.
A win against La Crosse Logan finished the day, but it didn't come easy. the Pointers dropped the first game 17-25 before winning 25-11 and 15-9. Schultz had eight kills and one block. Staver tallied three aces and seventeen assists. Chambers was solid with two aces, four kills, one block, and four digs. Weier also was balanced with four kills, two blocks, and three digs.
"After a first match loss in pool play to Waunakee, the girls turned it around and were able to win the remainder of their matches and only give up one game," said Pointer coach Dana Gevelinger. "We got stuck a few times on serve receive, but they were able to make key sideouts during games which helped swing the momentum."
