Dodgers win back and forth battle with GET
That name would be Brady Wetter.
Wetter, a 6-0, 210 junior running back had a three touchdown night for the Dodgers and carried the ball 34 times for 201 yards. That was a big night as the Dodgers netted 193 yards for the game.
GET had their share of major contributors too. Connor Kokott threw two touchdown passes and Butch Haines added a 20 yard run but it came down to one thing....the Red Hawks couldn't slow down Brady Wetter.
Kokott started it for the Red Hawks with a 35 yard scoring strike to Brenden Bender and Austin Dahl ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Later in the quarter Wetter answered with a one yard plunge and Jordan Olson pulled the Dodgers within one with a kick.
Haines raced 20 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-7 then Wetter raced 62 yards for a touchdown and Olson tied it with a kick, heading into halftime.
The Dodgers owned the third quarter when Jordan Larson threw a 65 yard scoring strike to Cris Francia and Olson kicked the conversion for a 21-14 lead.
GET was not ready to throw in the towel yet. Kokott finished a drive with a 12 yard pass to Brandon Riehle and the Red Hawks got within one.
But the Dodgers prevailed when Wetter roamed in from the five and made it 27-21.
It appeared to be a real learning curve for the Dodgers who did not play the week before when lightning cancelled their game at Marathon after a three plus hour bus ride.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack said the match-up with the Red Hawks turned into a hard hitting football game.
"We were very pleased as coaches," Bohnsack said. "Our offensive and defensive line executed the schemes with minimal flaws and included Taran Mortimer, Bryce Olson, Aaron Clerkin, Spencer Markham, Jake Brokish, Chance Gollon, Tim Gaither and Lance Johnsrud."
It was a game of momentum changes for the Dodgers, Bohnsack said.
"We experienced many ups and downs during the game," he added. "We turned the ball over on the opening possession that put the defense in a bad situation and were down 8-0. Then our quarterback play by Levi Nagel and Jordan Larson put us in good situations and we went into halftime tied 14-14."
The defense was a huge factor in shutting the Red Hawks out in the third quarter.
"In the third quarter the defense did a phenomenal job again sacking the quarterback (Lance Johnsrud), causing a fumble (Chance Gollon), and intercepting a pass (Shane Chapman)," Bohnsack said. "We were also successful in completing a 65 yard touchdown pass from Jordan Larson to Cris Francia. In the fourth quarter we were able to intercept a pass once (Ryan Raess) but we weren't able to put the game out of reach on a fumble going into the end zone. They were not able to execute an onside kick late in the game."
"We had some strong blocking as well from John Sanders to help Brady have his 200 plus yard night."
