Cardinals pull together to beat Potosi in five

Highland coach Maria Wineski had been doing more than her share of scratching her head after an early season loss to River Ridge a week ago.
Thursday her hands were put to better use, putting them together for the Cardinals. Highland lost the first two games to Potosi then pulled things together, won the next three and took the Six Rivers West match three matches to two.
What made Wineski so happy was that the Cardinals won it with a supreme team effort.
"We had some good individual performances but it was a team win," Wineski said. "Everyone had to contribute to get us a win. The girls really dug deep the last two matches."
Brenna Bomkamp had 11 kills and five blocks for the Cardinals and Shyann Dailey added eight kills and five blocks.
"Our play at the net was very tough,"  Wineski said.
Karen McMannes had three aces and nine assists while Morgan Hach contributed 17 assists.
Caitlin Wienkes spent most of her night diving after the ball and scooping it up as she came up with 27 digs.
"She did a really great job," Wineski said.
After losing 23-25 and 19-25 the Cardinals appeared to have game three under control as they cruised to a 19-12 lead. But the Lady Chieftains went on a run and looked like they were on the way to ending the match by taking a 23-19 lead.
But, the Cards had a run of their own in them and came back to trail by two at 23-21. They then went on to a 25-23.
The confidence the girls found in the comeback carried over to take the fourth match 25-22 and finale 15-10.
"Potosi was tough," Wineski said.
She added the girls learned some things about themselves in getting back into the game.
"They found out they don't always have to smoke the ball to get points," Wineski added. "The started to play smart volleyball and it paid off."
"The girls played smart, they played like a team and played great volleyball," Wineski said. "That was good to see."
