Pointers take Eagles in three

Despite a minor setback in the second game, the Mineral Point girls volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory in their home opener against Fennimore Tuesday night.
Scores were 25-13, 25-19, and 25-16 to open SWAL play.
After coming out hot in game one, and rolling to the victory, the Pointers fell behind 9-4 in the second game as it looked as if the Golden Eagles had woke up. Great serves by Carly Tibbits got the Pointers back in the match and tied things at nine all. Mineral Point then went up 19-14 before sealing the win at 25-19.
Fennimore kept things tight for the first part of game three before the Pointers pulled away for the game and the match.
Clara Chambers was the hot hitter with ten kills and Jalissa Weier added seven. Sydney Staver set for 25 assists and added four aces. Tibbits also had four aces.
On the defensive side, Jessica Schultz notched three blocks and Chambers hit the floor for four digs.
The match was under the instruction of coach Dana Gevelinger. Former head coach Tom Ingwell, who began practice this season, has resigned his position due to taking a teaching job.
Gevelinger was pleased to pick up a win to start the conference season on her home court.
"We had a good start tonight and came out ready to play," said Gevelinger. "We started a bit flat in the second game, but really came together as a team and continued to play well in the third game."
"I thought Sydney Staver did a nice job setting for us tonight, and we had good back row play overall. Carly Tibbits' serves were a big key to getting us back in that second game," she added.
"I think the tournament we went to last week really helped us and gave us good experience so we were able to get off on the right foot tonight," she concluded.
The Pointers host Iowa-Grant Thursday, travel to the Richland Center invite Saturday, and visit Southwestern Tuesday.
