Pointers cruise at Rio, face Southwestern Friday

Scotty Pittz ran for a pair of touchdowns and passed for two more as Mineral Point routed Rio 42-0 in non-conference football action Friday.
The Pointers forced a running clock the second half.
Pittz threw for 180 yards on a nine for 13 night and ran for 66 on nine carries. He ran the ball into the end one twice.
Pittz also threw touchdown passes to Sy Staver and Joey Gorgen. Staver led the receiving with four catches for 106 yards.
Turner Poad pounded the ground for 123 yards on 13 carries and crossed the end zone once.
Pointer coach Andy Palzkill liked the balance the Pointers were able to establish for the game.
"Offensively, we were able to be balanced and established a nice running game," Palzkill said. "It was nice to see our athletes take the ball down and score in our two-minute drill right before the end of the first half. We have gone to a no-huddle style offense and we are getting better at increasing the tempo of the game. That will be important for us to continue to get better at as we enter our conference season."
Palzkill also felt the defense performed well in stopping the Vikings.
"Our defense played great football and Coach Leonard has done an excellent job with our schemes," Palzkill said. "It is clear that our athletes are understanding football which helps them read and anticipate the opponent's offense."
"I thought Frank Baker, Logan Bidlingmeier, Ross Siegenthaler, and Tarek Oellerich played very well defensively," Palzkill added. "Up front, Dylan MacGilvra, Nate Cody, and Lance Steffes were very solid against Rio's double tight offense."
The Pointers open their SWAL season Friday and host Southwestern.
Palzkill feels the Pointers will have their hands full with the Wildcats.
"They are a very aggressive team defensively and they have changed their offense with new head coach Matt Clendenen to wing-t concepts," Palzkill said. " They will present us a challenge and we will have to improve our play to earn a win this Friday night."
