Pointers edge Panthers in SWAL finale
It was an "I got it, you take it" night for both teams. Iowa-Grant won the opener 25-19 then the Pointers returned the favor 25-23. The Pointers went one up with a 25-19 win before Iowa-Grant evened it with a 25-17 run to set up a fifth set.
That was also a back and forth battle before Mineral Point hung on for a 15-13 win to take the match.
"Well this was the classic match between our closest rival, a battle to the end." Panther coach Marla Simon said. "It was a good match to watch and both sides worked hard. We just fell short with getting some hits to go in that fifth set, along with a missed serve not at a great time. But overall we fought well and I'm happy with our play."
Simon juggled the line-up for Senior Night and had some girls come in and play well.
"Georgie Faull filled in well at middle, starting due to being senior night and Taylor Jackson and Emma Liddicoat had super nights playing defense in the back row with all of their digs," Simon said. "Haley Yelinek and Kristin Bingham did a good job to make it tough on them with their serves and having to pass those up. I think these past two matches have prepared us pretty well going into Tuesday night for tourney. But, still we need to take everything one point and play at a time."
Pointer coach Dana Gevelinger enjoyed the competition too.
"Tonight was a fun match," said Gevelinger. "Both teams came ready to play. We kept our energy up the whole night, even after losing game one. Iowa-Grant played well defensively and forced our hitters to play aggressively. Clara Chambers and Jalissa Weier hit really well off Sydney Staver's sets tonight. I'm happy with how the girls played and hope we take this energy into the post season."
