Some you never forget
By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com
It might be because of their ability to be a good friend. It might be
because they are good to everyone. It might be because they are a real role
model. There are many reasons why you will never forget them.
For me, Jan Roh is one of those people.
I knew Jan and know her family. I knew her sisters and her mother. They
are people who just make you smile.
Jan developed ALS, a disease that eventually takes you. There is no cure.
All you can do is make the best of what time you have left.
Jan did that. She knew something was wrong and because ALS is not a
common disease, it took awhile to get the proper diagnosis. Once she got
it, Jan was ready for the fight.
She refused to give up. If Doug, her husband, was taking the truck somewhere
she was ready to go with him. When the weather was good she
would sit outside and watch the day develop. She loved to see her grandchildren
come out for a visit and feed the chickens.
She would take a ride in her wheelchair to the barn to make sure the
chores were being done right. Her husband and the milkers always said
they had to be on the lookout for her because they knew they would be
under orders to do everything the right way.
Jan discovered reading as a real pleasure. She loved to read a book and
then discuss it. It was something she never had time for before her illness.
There are hundreds of people who mourn her death but they also have
wonderful memories of her to carry in their hearts.
I know I do.
If you want to do something to honor Jan take a few minutes and
smile....do something for someone else....read a book....write a letter....call
a friend.
She would appreciate it because that would be how she lived her life.
