Thoughts on football safety

By Kayla Barnes-

Tis the season for football! From college to high school, and of course the NFL, any game will get your blood pumping from the biggest fan to someone who just watches to watch something (like my mom who roots for whatever team is ahead). All the games are underway and teams are getting used to their new players.
A big issue that has been coming up is the safety of all these players. Just this year, several high school football players have died from injuries sustained during games. Concussions, heart attacks, you name it, it seems to be happening at such a young age.
People are concerned with the padding in the helmets or just extra padding for the players in general. Coaches have been teaching the kids not to lead with their head and protect themselves from further injuries to vital body parts.
But boys (and girls) will be boys (and girls). Once that testosterone and adrenaline kicks in when the words "HUT" get yelled to the blow of the whistle, it is hard to remember all of the lessons that were taught.
I was watching a NFL football game this past weekend and a player was tackled and his helmet came clean off. He got up, grabbed his helmet and went back to the huddle as if nothing happened. I thought, now how is that safe? Didn't his helmet just fly off? Is that how that is suppose to work because I thought a helmet was used to protect ones brain.
I hope that high school helmets do not do that. It is the younger generation that we want to save from growing up and having problems. I am not stating that we should not have football or change it to only flag football. But there does need to be a change to protect the ones we love and the ones we love to watch and keep them safe.
