Monthly awareness

By Kayla Barnes-

October happens to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month or Bullying Prevention Month. But October is also home to many other awarenesses.
Domestic Violence calls October it's month to educate people on the ways to stay safe and how to spot domestic violence. It was first observed in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered womens advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.
October gives the National Down Syndrome Society a chance to spread awareness about Down Syndrome. During the month they recognize people with Down Syndrome and make people aware of their abilities and accomplishments. It's not about celebrating disabilities; it's about celebrating abilities.
National Cyber Security Awareness Month is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives with the goal of raising awareness about cybersecurity and increasing the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident.
While the campaign lasts the entire month, most fire departments designate the second week in October as Fire Prevention week, during which demonstrations and expos are held in different U.S. cities. Fire Prevention Month has roots that date back to The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people and left more than 100,000 homeless.
World Vegetarian Day is observed annually on October 1. It also initiates the month of October as Vegetarian Awareness Month which ends with November 1, World Vegan Day.
Other awarenesses such as Lupus, Rett Syndrome, Adopt a Shelter Dog, Pregnancy and Infant Loss, Fillipino and Italian American, and Book Month observe October as their month to spread the word. Many of these subjects have been in the news lately. October is the month to look at each of them and learn more about them. See what you can do in your community to get the word about one or more to help spread knowledge.
