Cardinals roll over Comets
Highland's girls basketball team held Albany without a field goal for the first three quarters Tuesday and rolled to a 49-23 win in the non-conference opener for both teams from opposite sides of the Six Rivers.
All five baskets the Comets scored came in the final quarter including three from Lindsey Hoesly who reached double figures with 11 points.
Highland raced to a 17-2 first quarter lead then was up by 21 at halftime, 27-6. A 14-2 third frame sealed Albany's fate.
Senior post Brenna Bomkamp led the Cardinals with 12 points while sophomore Jessica Kosharek came through with 11 and junior Caitlin Wienkes 10. Eight girls scored for the Cardinals.
"We fouled a little too much but it was still a good win to open the season with," said coach Josh Tarrell.
He said Wienkes provided the jump start with eight points in the first quarter and Bomkamp had a steady game throughout. Kosharek also figured into the win with some good outside shooting.
The Cardinals are at Argyle Thursday.
