Blue Devils don't scare Dodger girls
The Dodgers, one of the favorites to repeat as SWC titlists, had four girls in double figures and one with eight as they mounted a balanced attack against the Lady Blue Devils.
Freshman Hannah Jones put up 18 points in her varsity debut while Taylor Stanek, facing a deny defense all night, added 13. Kara Crowley chipped in 12 points and Megan Pluemer 11. Kennedy Stumpf came close to double figures with eight.
Nine girls scored for the deep rostered Dodgers.
Brielle Greenleaf paced Evansville with 15 points.
The Blue Devils worked on keeping Stanek, who is close to becoming Dodgeville's career scoring leader, from getting her hands on the ball. But that didn't stop the senior from helping her team to a win.
"She did the little things like play strong defense and get key rebounds while she fought against the pressure," Dooley said. "She had a nice game."
The Dodgers jumped out to a 10 point lead but the Blue Devils fought back. Dodgeville led by four at halftime, 38-34.
A 22-13 final quarter sealed the win for the Dodgers.
"Hannah Jones was solid for us and we got good production from Kara Crowley and Megan Pluemer both who had an excellent game," Dooley added. "We also got some strong play off the bench."
He said Claire Binsfeld and Stumpf made the most of their time on the court to help in the win.
"It wasn't a very pretty win but it was a good one," Dooley said. "A new system takes some getting used to and I think it took a half before we got real comfortable."
It was also a battle of free throw prowess as Dodgeville was 16 for 34 and Evansville 19 for 37.
"There were 71 free throws attempted in the game," Dooley said.
The Dodgers are at Mineral Point Friday where they will face one of the SWAL favorites then head to Riverdale Tuesday.
