River Ridge tips Cardinals to earn volleyball sectionals


Trying as hard as you can does not always give you the results you want but you really never know until you give it your best shot.
Highland's volleyball team took on number one seed River Ridge at the lair of the Timberwolves Saturday and lost in three sets. But they did not go down without a fight.
The Cardinals could not find their rhythm in the first two matches and lost 25-16 and 25-14. But they gave the top seeded Wolves a scare in a third set that they stayed in until the end. River Ridge prevailed 25-20 and advanced to the Sectional semi-finals tonight at Shullsburg where they take on SWAL's second place team Southwestern. The winner will play either Plum City or Royall at Onalaska Luther Saturday.
The Cardinals started their third set with a strong effort. Jessica Kosharek came through with a kill and a block and Brenna Bomkamp a tip kill for a 4-1 lead.
The Cardinals used an ace and a block from Bomkamp and a kill by Bailiee Rose to grab a 10-6 lead.
Mackenzie Drury's kill made it 13-12 Highland before River Ridge went on a run.
Five return errors and two kills in River Ridge's favor game them the match.
The last point of the season for the Cardinals came on an ace by Karen McMannes.
McMannes, Drury and Morgan Hatch all had two aces for the Cardinals.
Bomkamp had eight kills and two blocks while Rose had five kills.
Morgan Hatch had 16 assists and Karen McMannes 12.
Caitlin Wienkes had 23 digs and Drury had 12.
The match was the last one for seniors Shyann Dailey, Morgan Hatch, Mackenzie Drury, Becky Pink, Andie Hach and Brenna Bomkamp.
