Lightning strikes on Vikings


Pecatonica-Argyle players and coaching staff closed out their 2014 gridiron schedule Friday evening when they were defeated 40-0 by the host Lake Country Lutheran 'Lightning' in a WIAA D-6 playoff game staged at Waukesha North High School.
Due to Lake Country Lutheran not possessing any ball field lighting at its normal home field site in Hartland, the game was moved to the new artificial turf field at Waukesha North High School.
The Lightning extended their perfect record to 10-0, taking advantage of a conference season in which they, arguably, faced a higher level of competition than Pec-Argyle, but on a night when they were also able to take advantage of a number of Viking players being out of the line-up, due to injury.
Vikings Drew Schliem, Gavin Burdick, Kole Kent, and Dalton James were just some of the key contributors who had been lost for the season by the time the Vikings faced their playoff opponents Friday, and at one point in Friday's, contest, quarterback Logan Green was injured, and for a time, normal running back and third string quarterback, Riley Ostby was additionally pressed into service as signal caller.
Coach Larry Green was complementary of the Vikings' opponent following the game, stating that without a doubt, Lake Country Lutheran was the most formidable opponents the Vikings had faced all season.
Speedster running back Adam Tovar was able to get the Lightning on the scoreboard with a one yard run late in the first quarter and quarterback Ben Wilkins threw for two touchdowns in the second quarter, the first being a four yard play to receiver Zach Edwards, and the second, three minutes later, to receiver Christian Caliendo, on a 39 yard scoring play.
Wilkins came into the game averaging in excess of three touchdown passes per outing, but the Lightning kept the ball on the ground more than anticipated, running the football 43 times for nearly 300 yards.
"It was one of those nights when we expected them to throw more, but in actuality, if you're having as much success running the ball as they were against us there's really not a lot of point in going to the air a great deal," said coach Green.
Lake Country Lutheran added three touchdowns in the third quarter, first on a Tovar 29 yard run, next on a touchdown pass from Wilkins to T.J. Hopkins from 17 yards out, and also on a late period pass touchdown, also to Hopkins, on a 44 yard pass play.
Neither team scored in the fourth and final period.
The Lightning piled up 294 rushing yards for an average of 6.8 yards per carry and three rushing touchdowns. Wilkins passed only 12 times but completed nine, including three for touchdowns and he finished with 136 yards of passing.
Pec-Argyle's Logan Green was four of eight through the air for 11 yards with three interceptions.
On the ground Friday, Riley Ostby was the Pec-Argyle team's top ground gainer with 12 carries for 27 yards and teammate Cam Treuthardt had seven carries for a total of 13 yards. On the night, Pec-Argyle had 27 rushing plays but only netted 24 total yards against an impressive Lake Country Lutheran defensive unit.
The top rusher for Lake Country Lutheran was Tovar who piled up 206 yards on 23 carries, averaging 9 yards per every carry.
"He was the best running back we've seen all year and his blockers did a great job opening up holes for him," added Green.
"We were a very young team this year and with so few seniors, combined with the number of injuries we had, I can look back now and just say I'm very proud of all of our players and coaches for the efforts that they put in throughout the season. Due to the numerous injuries, some of our younger players did get additional playing time and gained some valuable experience which should serve them well in the future and we very much look forward to the 2015 season," added coach Green. The Vikings finished at 6-4.
Lake Country Lutheran will now host Cuba City in a D-6 Level 2 game Friday night at 7 p.m. and in a game to be played at Kettle Moraine High School in Wales.
