Pointers outhit Chieftains but lose 2-1
Win.
"We did everything but win the game," said Mineral Point coach Dan Burreson. "We out him them 11 to 2. Tannler (Ames) was outstanding on the mound with both runs being unearned. We hit the ball hard, but they made a couple extra base saving plays that won the game. "
The Pointers scored a run in the first on a single by Tarek Oellerich, a sac bunt by Sy Staver, a walk to Ames and an rbi single by Gabe Ottoway.
But that turned out to be "it" for the Pointers.
Riverdale picked up a run in the second to set things even and put up the game winner in the fifth. Both runs were unearned.
Tanner Louis was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error to tie the game in the second.
Tanner Williamson reached on an error and scored on a single by Brett Hach for the game winner in the fifth.
Ames was almost untouchable. Besides the rbi single by Hach the only other hit he surrendered was a single in the seventh to Brandon Roen.
The senior righthander fanned seven and walked four. Only five Chieftains got as far a third base.
The Pointers got two runners to third the rest of the way but niether scored. Lee Stephenson reached on a fielders choice in the sixth and got to third on one of Dakotah James's three hits. Ames reached third in the seventh with one out after stroking a single and advancing on a hit by Turner Poad.
But, Alex Meister coaxed a fly ball that the first baseman caught for the second out and the third out came on an unassited play by the second baseman.
James was 3x3 with a double while Ames was 2x3 and Poad 2x3. Oellerich, Staver, Ottoway and Joey Gorgen had the rest of the hits.
"We battled right up until the end. In the top of the seventh Sy Staver hits one in the gap that looks like a sure double and the centerfielder makes a great diving catch. To lead off the sixth inning the left filelder made a nice running catch on a ball hit by Alec Schmitz," Burreson said.
"Riverdale currently leads the SWAL and they have beaten us 1-0 and 2-1," Burreson added. There is not that much difference between us and Riverdale. We just need to clean a few things up and keep hitting the ball hard. "
Alex Meister picked up the win in relief.
