Panthers get good start from Rider but bats go silent in SWAL loss to Riverdale
The Chieftains scored three early runs and let Alex Meister work his mound magic with a three hit shutout.
Cody Rider, Iowa-Grant's mound choice, dueled Meister pitch for pitch, turning in a performance that would have won many high school baseball games.
But not today.
Riverdale struck early with two runs in the first, one on a sacrifice fly and the other on an rbi single.
They put up one more run in the third when the leadoff hitter singled, stole second and third, and scored on a double steal attempt.
Meister struck out seven and walked two. He gave up a double to Panther catcher Acea Upmann and a single to his mound foe, Rider.
Rider fanned eight, walked three and held Riverdale to three hits.
The Panthers had three runners reach third base. Rider got there in the first after stroking a single and advancing on an error.
Josh Haase, who ran for Upmann, reached third in the third. He took over at second base after Upmann doubled and took third on a ground out.
Luke Nowak doubled to open the seventh and got to third on a ground out. But he stayed there when a strikeout and a groundout, second to first, ended the game.
