Last Sunday was Mother's Day. Our (Pat's and my) mother, Ruby, would've turned 100 last January 8th - same day as Elvis's birthday - somebody she didn't care for. Unfortunately she passed away over 10 years ago so we haven't had a mother to celebrate that day with in quite some time. But that doesn't stop us from thinking about her and all the good times we had growing up, after being grown up (some people would say that hasn't happened yet) and the good times with Pat's kids and some of the grandkids and my son Michael. Michael still has his mother and grandmother plus his wife Jolisa's mother to celebrate with. Mother's Day was always a time to try and pamper our mother, but really she wouldn't have any of that and really liked to cook. But she did concede at times to be pampered with a meal out on her day! Oh, and we have had some "like a mother" to help with the void. One that really comes to mind first is good friend Kathryn McGraw. Also, my neighbor Dorothy Weirich has baked things for me many times and we get to have brunch together (with husband Jack) on Sundays quite often!

Speaking of Mother's Day. Sunday at church I ran into several families and I asked the mothers what their kids were doing for her on her day. One said their kids weren't cooking the big meal of the day, but that they did make pancakes for her for breakfast. Another said that "that'd be the day when they cook!" Still another said the "kids" were treating her to dinner at Bob's Barbecue in downtown Dodgeville - and she had a big smile on her face!

We received a nice note to go along with a subscription renewal from Bob and Cindy Schaller of Barneveld. They wrote - "Chronicle Editor & Staff: Thanks for the great coverage you provide for the Barneveld School and Community. Greatly Appreciated - Bob & Cindy Schaller."

It really made my day Sunday when the Milwaukee Brewers came back to beat the New York Yankees in their three game finale, giving the Brewers two out of the three games. The Brewers are 10 games over .500 and have one of the best records in baseball. And they are banged up without their two best (most powerful) hitters in the line-up. They are just gutting it out right now with a bunch of almost no-names, good pitching and, of course, some luck! The Yankees have been a sore spot in my side since the 1957 era when the Milwaukee Braves beat them in the World Series and the fact that they have so much money to spend that they can pretty much buy any player they want and feel they need!

I heard from former Democrat Tribune editor and Dodgeville Chronicle writer/photographer Jeanie Lewis that the Hyde Blacksmith Shop open house Saturday was their biggest ever. Hats off to Klint McCutchin (who I heard passed away Sunday morning) for getting it going again and the crew that has taken over for doing such a great job hosting some of "the good old days" stuff!

As a tribute to Klint McCutchin - one could say that he would say about anything, but you had better listen as he was usually right on the head - and he was a great guy to have in your corner!
